What is a library Homework Help Center?

In response to an ongoing need for community-based, after-school programs, Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) launched an innovative concept – designated space within our libraries where students can find a free and welcome place to study after school. Students will also find a dedicated library staff member and knowledgeable volunteers to provide hands-on homework help. Free computers, resource books, printers, and school supplies round out the concept.

CML has 18 HHCs in Columbus Metropolitan Library locations, many funded by private donations. Construction for our 19th center in Hilliard will be underway soon. For the 2008-2009 school year, over 37,000 kids signed-up for homework help.

CML’s Homework Help Centers are primarily used after school from Monday – Thursday. During non-peak hours, the Homework Help Centers turn into Job Help Centers, providing employment resources for adults who are looking for work. In 2009, we had more than 21,000 visitors to our Job Help Centers.

How can you help?
We are still seeking funding for construction of two Homework Help Centers at our Dublin and New Albany branches. Typical construction cost to launch a new HHC is $45,000, with CML providing the ongoing operational costs. If you would like to support our existing HHCs, students are always in need of additional supplies and equipment.
