Our 17th annual Celebration of Learning was a truly spectacular evening! A record-breaking crowd was inspired by our featured author Azar Nafisi, who compelled us to think about culture, politics, human rights, and using the transformative power of literature to liberate minds and people.

We were touched by the video of Chris Spielman as he accepted the Julian Sinclair Smith Award for Lifelong Learning on behalf of his wife, Stefanie, and himself. We were honored to have Sue and Bill Fitz, Stefanie’s sister and brother-in-law, present to receive the award on their behalf.

We were privileged to have Mary and Bob Lazarus serve as Honorary Chairs. Longtime library champions, Mary and Bob have supported Celebration of Learning from its inception. Their involvement in the community, specifically in the areas of education and learning, is unsurpassed.

And, of course, we were well fed by some of Columbus’ finest restaurants and caterers!

We are pleased to announce Stefanie and Chris Spielman as our 2009 Julian Sinclair Smith Award winners. Since Stephanie was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998, they have worked tirelessly as advocates for breast cancer awareness. By going public with their fight, they have helped educate people about the importance of breast cancer education and prevention. During the past 11 years, the Spielmans have embraced lifelong learning as a way of life in their pursuit of life itself.
